Location
The Core District stretches from A Street to Broadway and Union Street and 12th Avenue and is considered the visual and physical center of downtown San Diego. It borders on Cortez Hill to the north; Little Italy to the northwest; the Horton District and Gaslamp Quarter to the south; to the east it borders on East Village; and finally, to the west, we find the Colombia District. The retail and hotel developments in the Core District saw its inception when Alonzo Horton began to develop this area of downtown San Diego in the 1860s. The Core area of downtown became what was considered the fashionable business district and entertainment quarter with several well-known entertainment venues, among which was the 1929 California Theater, until the 1960s when urban decline began taking its toll.
The Core District Today
Then, in 1975, the Centre City Development Corporation became a crucial element in the revitalization of the Core District in downtown and they began the renovation of this area for new residential and commercial uses, resulting in drawing in a new group of people who enjoyed working and living in an urban environment, something that took hold of cities all over the United States at about the same time.
The Core District has, since then, seen arevitalization that is hard to match. It has become the hub of the San Diego region's government and corporations. Here you will find City Hall, the Small Business Administration Building complex, Community Concourse, the Civic Theater, and the new Central Jail. It is also home the historic Copley Symphony Hall which offers a variety of fine arts and cultural events. Because of the high concentration of commercial and civic buildings, the Core District does not offer many resale condominium units but mainly apartment rentals. However, just recently there has been some components added to living accommodations with the newly completed Smart Corner and the Se San Diego which offers luxury hotel/condo hotel accommodations.
In the Core area is also where you will find San Diego’s tallest downtown building, the Symphony Hall. The luxurious Westgate Hotel is here, as is the old Grant Hotel which has been totally renovated yet had kept its main statuesque features of its frontal view and is truly a San Diego landmark. Both of these hotels offer both elegance and fine dining experiences, especially the Grant Hotel, which has been known for its fine cuisine over the years. And this was where you'd find the-who-is-who of the San Diego business community enjoying their luncheons in the 1960s and 1970s, and, since its renovations, also their evening fine dining.
The arrival of the San Diego Trolley, going through the downtown area, has added new vitality to the night life here as it allows the public to enjoy wine and drinks with their evening enjoyment and can still get home safely by using the Trolley. Both daytime and night time activities have benefited from the Trolley, fostering a plethora of new street level merchants discovering new opportunities in a friendly and central downtown, San Diego's Core District.
